By John Eldredge

A beautiful designed book of devotions that is inspiring and can be used from year to year. The devotional is designed for use each day of the calendar. Each devotion start with a Bible verse then a short devotion reading and ends with a short prayer. The words are very inspiring and the subject of this devotional is for you to start a restoration of your faith in God. At the back of the book is a section titled A Daily Prayer and also included is a index of the sources by dates, this lets you lookup devotions by subjects. This maybe helpful when you are dealing with certain things in your life or if you want to offer help to others.

The book should be a great help when you want to pursue a lasting transformation and experience in gaining more love for God, help in your relationships and a better life. Restoring a close relationship with God is important and this book will help.

BIBLE: TWO PROOFS AND TWO MIS-TRANSLATIONS

BIBLE:
TWO PROOFS AND TWO MIS-TRANSLATIONS

Why Some Christians Reject Science

By Jesse Clopton James

A quote from the book, “This book deals with the explosion of scientific knowledge in the twentieth century and how this new knowledge compares with the creation account in the Bible.
This new knowledge required scientists to change their thinking about some physical things behaved, and it required Bible believers to change their thinking about the meaning of certain Bible passages”.

The book contains a lot of information about science, it may seem at times you are reading a science textbook and it can be a bit confusing sometimes. The author uses the information to try and proof that the creation took millions of years (old earth belief) and that the belief of a young earth is wrong because of mistranslation of earlier Bible translators. The author states that the Hebrew word “Yom” was not translated correctly into Greece and English and that by the translation of “Yom” as day this causes many believers to misunderstand the word day. The author offers information to try to prove his belief. The author states that he does not believe in evolution.

In my opinion, whether we believe that God created the Universe in days, weeks, or years is not as important as to how long we will be spending eternity with or without God.

I Declare War

I DECLARE WAR

4 Keys to Winning the Battle with Yourself

By Levi Lusko

Something going on in your life that you want to change? Bad moods by day, bad dreams at night or is it fears of something that you want to change. Then it is time to declare war, Levi Lusko will take you through many problems that he has dealt with in his life and offers you a way of handling similar things from your life. He shares his fears and things that has given him problems throughout his life. His writing has Bible verses to help with the spiritual side of your needs and he also uses humor in telling some stories

The book is divided into four sections: Declare war on what you think, Declare war on what you say, Declare war on what you do and Phantom power (the help you need to win this war). Each section deals with everyday things that we have allowed to get us into a bad mood or just plain upset us.

Throughout the book there are quotes about things that we need to work on in our war with ourselves. Here are two ,

“The habits you allow in your life today are going to determine who you become tomorrow.”
“The message of the Gospel isn’t try it’s trust”

I think the book can be a help in dealing with those things that we all want to change and will allow us to see those things differently.

Overcomer

OVERCOMER

8 Ways to Live a Life of Unstoppable Strength
Unmovable Faith, and Unbelievable Power

By Dr. David Jeremiah

This is a collection of stories about those who have overcome hardships in life. Those who do what many thinks is impossible. The stories are about different people in the Bible and those that you may have heard about in the news and those not in the news. Stories of King David and Saul, stories of many who achieved great things after having a bad start in life and shows how our faith in God is a major help. The stories are very interesting to read and show just how, with God’s help, we can become an overcomer as well. Dr. Jeremiah shares things that have happen to him over his years of ministry and of people he knows. Each chapter contains stories that fit with the armor of God that we need to be wearing and each part of the armor is explained in detail, adding to the stories that are shared. Each chapter end with a Bible verse that are uplifting and will give you something to think about.

Here is a quote from the book about overcoming;

“Jesus overcame the one who held the power of death, the devil, and freed us from the fear of death.
Because of Jesus, we can clothe ourselves and stand in joyful triumph. Just when it seemed humanity was overcome by death, Satan was overcome by Christ. Doubt was overcome by truth, and grief was overcome by joy.”

The book is well written and has a lot of information about many different subjects. It can be used in discussion groups, as a Bible study or just for a casual reading.

Great new Bible

THE INFOGRAPGHIC BIBLE

Visualising the Drama of God’s Word

By Karen Sawrey

A new way to learn the Bible, that is what Karen Sawrey is offering in this new book. A well-done collection of charts, graphs, and illustration of many different contributors and compiled by Karen are in this beautiful book. This book offers help to those who have faith or not to learn the drama and story of God’s Word in a new way. Designed for the visual generation and anyone who enjoys charts to learn, The Infographic Bible aims to create a visual image and support those graphics with text that can be understood by anyone. The Infographic Bible should not be used as a replacement for the Bible but as an addition for a better understanding and new way of seeing some information.

The charts are separated into different sections consisting of;
About the Bible-Setting the formation of the Holy Scripture,
God is Love-the nature and names of God,
Created for relationship-women of influence, etc.
Relationship broken-the fall explained,
A rescue plan-Abraham, Judges and others,
The plan rejected,
About the Bible-topic for today,
Jesus comes-Birth of Jesus, parables of Jesus, etc.,
Starting over-Pentecost, Paul,
Relationship restored-Revelation,
About the Bible-Today’s tally.

A chart of Scripture distribution in the world, a chart of languages that the Bible has been translated into, a diagram of the Ark, a chart of clean and unclean animals, diagram of Solomon’s temple and wealth and a page to get creative by coloring it, are offered at the end of the book.

This new way of learning the Bible is done very well and should be a great asset to anyone’s family time, Bible studies and personal time. It would make a great gift.

Beatitudes

LET THE BEATITUDES
BE MY ATTITUDE IN YOU

Begin The Quest

By Marlin J. Harris

The author hopes to show how the beatitudes are important and how we need to understand them. In this book you get a description of each one. Marlin says that the “Beatitudes are character building callings from the Master Himself to take up a sacred quest to become the person God created you to be.” The author was a missionary to Paraguay and shares some stories from that experience. He writes about the important of the beatitudes and why Jesus used them to prepare hearts for what He had to say on the Sermon on the Mount. The book is divided into ten chapters, each chapter dealing with a single beatitude, with an added story of a person from the Bible, such as Moses, Abraham, Paul and others. The author uses scripture verses, quotes from different writers and quotes from some Christian songs. At the end of each chapter he offers “Thoughts for meditation” section that will help you in your understanding of the beatitudes that was covered in that chapter.

The book can give you a new understanding of the beatitudes and be used fin discussion groups. In my opinion, he could have used less quotes from songs, other then that it is well written and is a informative book.

The author uses his years of studying and preaching the Word of God to answer questions that you may not even had thought of. Great Devotional

THE CASE FOR CHRIST

Daily Moments of Truth

By Lee Strobel & Mark Mittelberg

The goal of Lee Strobel and Mark Mittelberg was to offer a different kind of devotional and to show the truth of the Gospel. The most important commandment according to Jesus is;
29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. 30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. 31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31 NIV
Most devotionals cover the areas of -- all their hearts and with all their souls, what the authors wanted to do was cover -- is loving God with all our minds and with all our strength. They start with a Bible verses and quote from other Christians and continue with a writing showing the truth to help understand the Gospel and ends each devotion with a section they call, MOMENT OF TRUTH. They have written 180 devotions and offer an excellent way for all to study the devotions through Bible studies and/or discussion groups.

I believe they have accomplished their goal and recommend this book for believers and non-believers alike for and easy to read and understand devotional. The book I had for this review was a hardcover copy and was very sturdy and would handle everyday use.

Rebuilding help

THE NEHEMIAH CODE

It’s Never Too Late for a New Beginning

By O. S. Hawkins

New beginning and rebuilding are two things that we most likely have attempted to do in our life. Nehemiah had the job of rebuilding the wall and city of Jerusalem. This book is a study of the book of Nehemiah and his method of rebuilding and how the method will work for you as you attempt to start over or repair things in your life. When we try to rebuild that relationship with a friend, our marriage or any other part of life that needs to be rebuilt. The author takes us through the book of Nehemiah and shows us Nehemiah expert method of rebuilding. Rebuilding a wall is different then rebuilding relationships, but the method of doing the work is the same and this is what the author is sharing.

The book is written in six parts; getting started right, building a team spirit, rebuilders let go without letting up, understand “YAC” is what really matters, never cut what they can untie and finish strong. Some of these subjects may sound funny but when you read the answers you will understand what to do for the best results. Each part gives you a method that worked for Nehemiah and will work for you on the most important rebuilds in your life.

The book would make a great Bible study for groups to discuss and help others in their times of need. In the back of the book, in the Appendix, you get the book of Nehemiah, so you have it with you when you are reading this book. The book is a part of a series by O. S. Hawkins, most of those I have reviewed, and would add to anyone’s library.

Simply God

SIMPLY GOD

God’s Messages of Love and Encouragement

By Rich Richards

The book is about different subjects that shows the love of God is simple and not hard to understand. The author writes it with a different person talking, one is himself and the other is God speaking. There are 24 chapters, each on a difference subject. Some of the subjects are; simplicity of God and Jesus, choices, obedience, righteousness to name a few. In the writing of each subject, the author shares Bible verses to help in the understanding. Some of the Bible translations used are the BBE (1965 Bible in Basic English), MKJV (Modern King James Version), which were 2 translation that I was not familiar with but found them to be easy to understand. He uses other translations as well. The truth of the book is that the love of God is ours and it is not as complicated as some try to make it. He shares some poems that are worth reading more than once.

The book has a lot of information and can get your thinking, but keep an open mind as you read, the changing from one person to the other person can be a little detracting. I think the author does a good job of getting his points across and shows the God is what we need, I am sure not everyone will like this style of writing.

Senior Moments with the Bible

SENIOR MOMENTS WITH THE BIBLE

Brief Daily Bible Lessons for Seniors

By Dorman Laird

Dorman Laird has put together a collection of devotions that he had written for his in-laws and put them in this book for us who are in the older generation. A collection of 365 devotions covering many different subjects, like, the power of gospel, the power of the Holy Spirit, God provides, forgiveness and many more. There are devotions for Christmas, stories of the Bible, Christian living and more. These devotions are directed to seniors who may not get to attend church because of health reasons. They are a daily inspiration for anyone to use each day. Comes with a table of contents that will make it easy to look up a special reading for a special need or occasion. The devotional is dated for dates of the calendar but not any days of the week, which make it usable for many years. Each devotion has a Bible verse with a short writing of inspiration.

It is well written and easy to understand and offers help in many areas of life. A great blessing for many.

I think it would make a great gift for those who do not get around as well as they did and for those who want a simple devotion to read each daily that is centered more on their age. It would be great for those in senior homes and could be used as a group.

GOD’S WISDOM AND PROMISES

Compiled by Jack Countryman

From the publisher of God’s Wisdom for Your Every Need, a new book to help us find God’s wisdom through His Word. The author has laid out fourteen sections of different subjects, like; Thinks to remember when---, What to do when you feel---, What you should know when----, What the Bible says about---, The power of God, just to name a few. Each section has sub-categories that uses scripture verses showing God’s Wisdom and Promise to help with that subject. The author answers to each subject and sub-category using only the verses from the Bible, not any word of man, only God’s word. The book is easy to understand, easy to navigate using the table of contents and scripture index that is in the back of the book. James

JAMES: FAITH BECOMES REAL

The book of James is a small book of the New Testament that covers many ways of behavior for the Christian. Carole Arceneaux has taken the book of James and wrote a commentary on the book. She gives a description of each chapter and then shares what she sees in the verses. Writing her commentary in a different way than most, she has laid out the book like a devotional. Starting with a verse or a set of verses and writing a short description of those. She uses other scriptures in her descriptions, adding to the meaning and at the end of each section she asks a question to get you to think about what you have read. She has covered the many subjects of James in detail.

The book is well written and easy to understand and can be uses in discuss groups and in Bible studies. The book can be used as a reference book using the detailed contents at the beginning of the book. The book is short, but the author covers the points that James was telling his readers.

The stories are about Billy’s family, his love for them, his belief and what he tried to show everyone that encountered him. Franklin shares how his father’s beliefs and life had a great affect on him and the decision he has made to continue Billy’s work for Christ.

I believe that you will want to read and reread this book to get to know just what kind of a man Billy Graham was. The book will open areas of Billy’s life that a bio would not share or show. I found so much information about Billy Graham that I did not know, and many others may not know but is so important to knowing the man. The book can be used in discussion groups or just for some casual reading.

A quote from Billy: “When you read or hear that Billy Graham is dead, don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive then than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.”

Equipping God’s People with Answers to Life’s Tough Questions

By Mike Larsen

The questions that Mike Larsen answers in this book, are from a list of questions taken from a survey at his church. The questions are questions that you may have asked yourself. These nine questions cover some topics that have been asked in many churches by many people. Some of the questions are: If God is so powerful, why is there suffering, why do bad things happen, what does the Bible say about homosexuality, what does the Bible say about divorce and other questions that are important to believers today. Mike has given answers to these questions using the Bible to answer them.

This book can be used as a reference book for some and can be used for a Bible Study or discussion group. I think the questions and answers are some of the important questions that Christians need to know the answers to and can be used in witnessing to others. Mike uses some stories from his own life to help explain some of the answers he offers. Mike shares many things from his personal life wanting the reading to know where he came from in life. The book is easy to read and understand.

Daniel Henderson in this book give you a complete detail description of who the Holy Spirit is. He shows how the Holy Spirit directs us to a more fuller life with Christ and how the Holy Spirit works. He covers the misconceptions about the spirit, the true meaning and how the Holy Spirit works. Daniel use ten practices to explain all this in and easy to understand way. You will learn to embrace the Holy Spirit, to pursue the indwelling person, not an external force, worship like you are the house of the Lord, enjoy the gift of Biblical emotion and other things that are needed to understand the Holy Spirit.

The book is very informative and has a lot to offer. I am sure you will come away from reading this book with a whole new way of looking and understanding the Holy Spirit. The book is ideal for Bible Study and discussion group. Enjoy reading and going through this book with the family for a new experience with the Holy Spirit.

The author states; “This book has not been intended to question your experience of the Holy Spirit, but to challenge you to think of His work more clearly and speak for His Word more Biblically so that you can experience His power in your life more fully. If we determine that wee will continue to grow in our understanding of, love for, and obedience to the Holy Spirit, the Lord will grant us that blessing.”

Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again

By Rachel Held Evans

In the introduction Rachel Held Evans shares how the stories of the Bible have a different meaning or understanding to her when she was young and how they changed in meaning when she got older. The stories we learn in Sunday School may mean a whole different thing to us later in life. The rest of the book she divides into eight sections to write a different view about eight stories of the Bible giving a different view to each one. She uses the story of Esther, Moses, Job and others. In one of the stories, the story of Job, she writes it as a screenplay, others she changes or added to the stories. I was not a fan of some of the changes she did, but then I do not care for most changes done in movies. I had trouble following the point she was trying to make in some of the stories.

You may like the direction she took the stories, but it was not what I expected when I requested the book and was disappointed in the book. The book is well written and easy to read.

Commentary on Revelations

REVELATION – NEW EDITION

Everyman’s Bible Commentary

By Charles C. Ryrie

A redesigned edition of the commentary that offers the same Biblical truths set forth by Charles C Ryrie as before. The commentary is very important to all who want a better understanding of the book of Revelation. The in-depth commentary has the true meaning of the scripture plus other background information of the culture and people that would have first read Revelation. It gives a true meaning to what John saw and held when he received his vision from Christ. Having this book with you when you are reading the book of Revelation will be a great experience.

As I was reading this commentary I came across items that I had not learned in my earlier studies of Revelation. I really like the included illustrations and charts and found them a great help. The book offers so much to the understanding of God and His plans for the end times and way we need to accept Christ as Savor. The book is a must have for anyone’s library and would be a great help in Bible Studies.

I want to thank Moody Publishers for the opportunity they have given me to do a review on the redesigned commentary by Charles C. Ryrie on the book of Revelation. They have used part of my review on the back cover of the redesigned edition, this has been an honor. Thank you, Moody Publishers

Discovering God’s Hidden Treasures

By Brooke Caldwell

A thirty-day devotional that is packed full of spiritual help. Brooke has taken a step forward in her desire to write a short devotional for everyone, no dates or days to follow, just a heart full of love for God and a desire to share that love. She starts each devotion with a scripture verse and with her writing enhance that verse with stories from her life that give a better understanding to each. Each devotional has a prayer and some questions at the end that will get you thinking about the verse and devotion. I think you will find at lease one devotion that will touch or can be compared to something in your life and will help you understand that God is there to help you. She deals with jealousy, mercy, gentleness and other things that may affect your life in Christ. At the end of the book you are given an opportunity to accept Christ into your life or recommit yourself to Him.

A quote from the author about God is, “There is nothing in this world that will satisfy you like He will and there is nothing in the world that will fulfill you and complete you like His love will. He is the greatest treasure of all.”

The copy I received to review was an ebook, which makes it easier to have with you. Use the book with others for discussion groups by using the questions at the end of each devotion. The book is well written, spiritual and a blessing to read.

Faith among the faithless

FAITH AMONG THE FAITHLESS

Learning From Esther
How to Live in a World Gone Mad

By Mike Cosper

Mike Cosper shares a different point-of-view of the book of Esther, one that most people may not have thought of, it shows how Christians of today are similar to the Jews of Esther’s time. The way the world is trying to assimilate the Christian into the ways of the world. By comparing the Christian with the Jew, of that time, Mike has shown that we Christians have to standup for our beliefs and not change our way of thinking about God and His Word, the Bible. Satan is trying to control the world just as Haman wanted to control the Jews, he wants to eliminate our beliefs and rights to worship God. Haman tried to use the government to do this, just like organization are trying to use our government to take away our rights.

I think, Mike has made his point as to what is going on in our world to take away our religious freedom and how we need to follow the example of Esther and fight for who we are and what we believe. He shows us the facts in this comparison and what we need to do before our religious freedom is gone.

A quote from the back of the book: “Encounter a timeless story of evil, awakened faith, and hope for good in a world where God seems absent.”

Another quote: “Perhaps one of the best things we can do to serve Christians in a culture like ours is to work for influence, to try to bring a greater sense of “peace in the realm” to our cities and communities.”

This book can be used as a Bible study or be great for Bible discussion for any age groups. The book is well written and easy to understand and will make you think.

Lessons from life

LESSONS FROM LIFE

Four Keys to Living with More Meaning, Purpose, and Success

By Steven M. Darter

Steven shares a collection of stories that are from his life. A life of growing up in Brooklyn in the sixty’s. The stories are entertaining, and Steven does not hold back on the details. He goes from 5 years old to becoming a teenager who makes mistakes, how finding the right spouse is important and shares going to college. His life was not easy, but he learns from his mistakes and learns how to help others. He shares things about his family and issues he had to deal with, the trials and errors that we all make, and he learns how God is in control and helps him to go and help others. The stories are in presented in sections dealing with meanings, purposes, success and God and how that helps him in his life. His success is accomplished by learning from his mistakes and he hopes by sharing these stories they will be helpful to the reader.

The book is easy reading, the stories hold your interest and you can learn from them. I think the main purpose of the book is to show that God is with us all the time, even when we don’t realize it. Read the book to help you see your purpose for being here, the meaning of that life and get the success that is waiting, God has his plan for us.

Unlike other books on my blog and my other reviews, I received a paperback copy of this book from the authors for my honest opinion of the book.

Age of Crowns

AGE OF CROWNS

Pursuing Lives Marked by the Kingdom of God

By Kori De Leon

Pursuits in life is what Kori De Leon is covering in her book. Whether it is a sense of purpose, being recognized or other parts of life we are all doing it. We are bombarded with choices of the world on tv, in newspapers, magazines, book and movies, they try to tell us what is best for us. These offers are all for our life on this world not our eternal life. If you have accepted the offer for eternal life with God by accepting Jesus as your savior, then you want to make different choices. She uses scripture verses to show the difference of what God offers and what the world offers. She describes the Age to Come as a Kingdom ruled by a powerful King and that we need to prepare for this Kingdom now and that its already exists. The information she offers cover all that you will need to be prepared for that eternal Kingdom. She covers a longing for the Age to Come, a King worth living for, and what an adventure it can be. The Church as the bride of Christ and the important of that marriage and the important of the rewards that are ours in eternality. After reading this book you will have a view of what is waiting in that Kingdom.

The author offers some study questions at the end of each chapter that can be used to study God’s Word and used in discussion groups. The book is well written and easy to read and understand.
