The Assault

THE ASSAULT

Harbingers Cycle Two

By Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, Alton Gansky

This is the second book of a series written by four different authors. The story is about four people, working as a team to fight evil that is trying to take over the world. The four are from different walks of life, a tattoo artist, a professor, professor’s assistant and ex-football player but they all work very well together. Each section is narrated by a different person of the team and written by a different author, but is done in a way that they all blend together to make one story. This book start in the Vatican, goes to Florida and end in California. The evil they come against is very unbelievable and can be considered sci-fi, houses that turn to liquid, animal and people taken over by a fungus and different evil people under the control of something or someone, trying to take over.

If you enjoy horror or sci-fi you may enjoy this book. I like sci-fi but some of the things in this book are just a little weird. Very little about God is shared in the book, there is only one of the four that is a true believer and shares his beliefs. No profanity or sexual overtones are in the book. Good reading for this type of book, built up suspense and the story holds your interest.

Start with Amen

START WITH AMEN

Author Beth Guckenberger shares some of her stories of being on missionary trips and traveling. The stories she shares are her personal experiences that has helped her understand amen and the true meaning. A definition of amen is “so be it” and used at the end of prayer, the author also feels it also needs to be used at the beginning as well. Her thoughts of using amen at the start of prayers as well at the end are shared. She shows that amen is a word of power and shares why she thinks that. She includes scriptures that prove her beliefs about amen. She covers the benefits of amen, the restoration, barriers, first steps, challenges and boldness of amen.

Red Letter Words

THE RED LETTER WORDS OF JESUS

By Jack Countryman

Most Bibles published today have the words of Jesus printed in red. The red color is used to represent Jesus's blood that was shed for us. In this book Jack Countryman compiles over 100 of those red-letter passages into a book that can be used like a devotional. The red-letter words are words spoken by Jesus and are important in our relationship with Christ. Jack gives an explanation and background facts about each chosen passage. The red-letter words teach us how to live, Jesus's relationship with God and the Holy Spirit. They also reveal His love for us.

As an enhancement, an illustration has been added to each page that shows the red-letter words. In my opinion, this makes them more like a plaque you would want to hang on your wall, the illustration adds to the beautiful words.

The book is very easy to read and understand, a great addition to anyone’s library. I would recommend using this book as a devotional, Bible study help and as a discussion group topic and study.

EveryJob A Parable

EVERY JOB A PARABLE

What Walmart Greeters, Nurses & Astronauts Tell Us About God

By John Van Sloten

Do you think your job is important to God? Does God think your job is important to Him? The answers can be found in this book about jobs and how they serve God. The author has compiled many stories from across the USA about the different occupations and vocations from the people that work every day for a living. Many of these people do not realize how important their job is and how much God is using that job and them for His glory. Stories from the high paying to the job that own pays minimum wages, every job is important to God. The book is written in four parts; What does it mean to image God?, What is a parable, and how is work a parable?, What does God reveal to us about Himself through our work?, and How can we more effectively and consistently image God through our work?.

A very easy reading and a lot of information in this book. The book can be used in discussion groups and other studies. There are sections at the end of each chapter called Lectio Vocatio, that has some discussion questions.

A quote from the back of the book; “John Van Sloten leads an innovative investigation of vocation. It’s a fascinating journey that illuminates how your work is a parable of God—as you work, you are an icon of grace.”

Eats with sinners

EATS WITH SINNERS

Loving Like Jesus

By Arron Chambers

(In this review, I use “the lost” to signify sinners that are lost, since we are all sinners.)

The author goes into detail about reaching out to the lost with the Gospel and offers methods of reaching out. Using the examples from scripture on how Jesus reached the lost and how we were instructed to do the same. He covers character traits of integrity, accessibility, grace, faith, intimacy, tolerance, resolve, urgency, mercy, humility, investment, joy and vision. The methods described in this book have been proven at the authors church and other churches with good results. Some questions asked are why spending time with the lost is important, do you avoid the lost, is there a degree of sin and others. He shares many stories and examples of how the lost have been reached by others. Each chapter closes with some questions to think about and can be by discussion groups.

The book is well written and easy to understand and can be a blessing to everyone. We are asked by Jesus to reach out to the lost and we are to share the Gospel with all. We can do this by being a friend to that person and by the way we live.

A quote from the introduction:

“Being lost is never fun. Being lost and realizing that no one is looking for you is even worse.”

Remember we were all lost at one time, we are still sinners, but by the grace of God we are forgiven and saved.

What happens after you die?

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU DIE

A Biblical Guide To Paradise, Hell, and Life After Death

By Randy Frazee

What happens after you die is a question most everyone has asked. There are many answers, or what may appear to be answers, in the world. Randy Frazee has written a book that answers that question with a easy to understand reasoning.  The book in written from a Biblical viewpoint and in my opinion the right viewpoint. Randy tells of his struggle with the death of his mother because of cancer. On the way to the hospital for treatment his mother asked him if Jesus was enough. Randy searches God’s word for answers and shares his findings in this well written book. He covers subjects of what happen if I die without Christ, what happens if I die with Christ and other questions concerning heaven and hell. Each chapter offers questions and answers for discussion, making this book easy to use as a Bible study or for Sunday school lessons.

The book is very informative and well worth the time to read and I think the book has a lot to offer everyone, believer or non-believer. The book is easy to read and understand makes for great reading.  There is no question that it answers the question, What happens after you die.

Misused Stories

THE MOST MISUSED STORIES IN THE BIBLE
Surprising Ways Popular Bible Stories Are Misunderstood
By Eric J. Bargerhuff
The author take 14 stories from the Bible and shows how sometimes these stories are misinterpreted, he give an interpretation that he feels is the right one. His version is a common-sense interpretation not one that is being used to get a view point across. Eric feels that God has a meaning for the story and offers, what he thinks is the meaning is. He covers stories of David and Goliath, Zacchaeus among others. Areas that the author touch upon are, the context of the story, understanding the meaning, not to read modern day biases into the story, reading into the stories at is not there and other things that cause misunderstanding.
I want to share a quote from the back of the book; “Filled with fascinating historical and spiritual insights, this concise yet thorough book will help you learn how to read and apply all of God’s Word more faithfully.”
I like and think we need books like this to help protect us from some of the false teachers and their confusing methods.

Forgiving

THE WAY OF LETTING GO
One Woman’s Walk Toward Forgiveness
By Wilma Derksen
The forgiveness this book deals with is forgiveness of losing a child in a tragedy. This is very hard for anyone to deal with. The author and the writer of the introduction give examples of how different people handle a loss of this type. Some want to get revenge, some never let go of what took place. The author shares what she and her husband went through when their daughter went missing and for seven weeks. When they got the news of their daughter’s body being found, they had to come to grips with the truth that their daughter was not coming home, their hope was gone. She shares how they handled that news and how they worked on going on with life. She offers ways of letting go of the fear, grief, their guilt and blame as well as rage along with many other things. She shares all emotions that she and her husband went through and how they worked on forgiving. In the last chapter, chapter 23, of the book she explains what forgiveness.
The author has traveled to different areas to share her story with others who need comfort from being victimized and need help in dealing with their own tragedies.

Invitation

INVITATION
Harbingers
Cycle One
By Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt and Alton Cansky
Four author, four stories with the same characters in each. Told from a different character view point sharing the same adventure. This book is packed with suspense and mystery. The stories are adventures that are shared by four different people that are somehow drawn together to work as one. They each have a gift that they cannot explain but work together as one to solve the sci-fi type adventures they are drawn together to solve. They cannot agree on some things but they work together to solve the mystery that is assigned to them. The four are joined by a fifth person, a young boy, on their second adventure and he continues with them as they go on to their next mystery. The stories hold your interest and keep you anticipating what will happen next. The fact that each section is written by a different author and the story line hold through till the end. Each section or story has its own surprises and will keep you looking for more.
I found the book very entertaining and easy to read and follow. I also found it hard to put down because it held my interest and found I wanted to find out what was going to happen next. I liked the fact that some scripture was added and it had a spiritual overtone. I understand that the publisher has plans of continuing this as a series with more books by the same authors.

The Dawn of Christianity

THE DAWN OF CHRISTIANITY
How God Used Simple Fishermen, Soldiers, and Prostitutes to Transform the World
By Robert J. Hutchinson
This book answers questions about the early church and how it came to be. The author has divided the book into four parts. Part one, the road to Jerusalem, is about the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem  and what took place up to the crucifixion. The second part, Alive, is the story of what took place from the resurrection to coming of the Holy Spirit. Part three, the beginning of persecution, the ministry of Peter to the stoning of Stephen. and the conversion of Saul. Part four, the expansion of the Jesus movement, covers the ministry of Paul to the Gentles to spreading the word around the world.
The author shares information about what took place using other historical writings as well as the Bible. Written in an easy to understand story style. A time line chart is included showing when things took place with scripture references. A list of who’s who in the early Jesus movement is also included.
The book should give a better understanding of what took place from the start of Jesus’s ministry to the start of the church. This would be an asset for working with new believers. A great addition to any library.

The Dog Who Was There

THE DOG WHO WAS THERE

A Novel

By Ron Marasco

A dog named Barley has a story to tell, a story that is unbelievable and a story about a kind man that most everyone knows. This is a story told from a different viewpoint.  Barley is living with his masters Duv and Adah, living a good life that any dog would love. Sometimes he has dreams of when he was a puppy with his mother and siblings. These dreams are not always pleasant. Barley is doing find until something happen to his masters and he ends up homeless. He does find a new master who is also homeless. This relationship will take Barley in contact with the kind man, (Jesus). He views different parts of the week between what we call Palm Sunday and the crucifixion. Barley story is interesting and has some good points as well as bad point.

My dislike is the details of cruelty and treatment of Barley by some; I felt that some of the details were too vivid for this type of book. At times, the story becomes sidetracked and parts are dragged out. You are three quarters through the book before Barley sees the kind man. In all, the entire story is good and has a number of surprises.

The Coming Apostasy

THE COMING APOSTASY

Exposing the Sabotage of Christianity From Within

By Mark Hitchcock & Jeff Kinley

Are we on the verge of a great apostasy in the church? Apostasy in general is defection or departure from the tenets of some religious community.  For a Christian this is a departure from the truth of scripture. The falling away is not only the individual but also can be the church or whole denominations.

Apostates are consistently characterized by two things in the New Testament: false doctrine and ungodly living, they believe wrong and behave wrong. This book shows how the apostates are working in the churches and replacing sound doctrines and truth of scripture with new ideas and new interpretations of God’s Word. They are trying to change the truth taught just 50 years ago and taking a different stance on many. Many examples are shared and outlined by these two authors to show just where and how these false doctrines and changed truths come about. These changes can be done slowly over time and are not noticed right away, when they are finely noticed, it makes it that much harder to get things back to the truth.

I would suggest reading this book with an open mind and checking the contents offered against God’s Word the Bible for the truth. You may be surprised that some of the things you now believe may be wrong.

Killing Us Softly

KILLING US SOFTLY

Reborn in the Upside-down Image of God

By Efrem Smith

The author covers a subject in this book that need to be addressed in the Christian church.  The subject of how God loves us and will make the changes in our heart after we accept Christ as savior. That the changes are done by Him and not by us. The changes of how we look at things of the world and things in the world. The author shares stories from of his growing up and his adult life. He shares stories from people he knows and scriptures that help us understand how these changes are needed. He uses a term upside-down world, how those views need to change and once Christ is in our heart they will start to change. How we look at others, not to accept the worldview on everything.

The book is very informative and easy to read. The examples shares will help you to understand that we are God’s children and that God loves us and wants us to be His. God does the hard word, all we have to do is listen.

I think this would make a great book to use working with new believers and in discussion groups.

This book will feel the soul and body. A very enjoyable and easy to read book.

I had an ebook for my review but the cover design is eye catching and colorful. I recommend this book even if you only use the recipes but hope you will read the stories.

How's your soul?

HOW’S YOUR SOUL?

Why Everything That Matters Starts With The Inside You

By Judah Smith

When you meet someone, you usually say or they say to you, “How are you/” or “How are you doing?”, these are standard greeting used every day. What if you asked or was asked “How‘s your soul?”, how would you or others react? Our soul is the most important part of us and the condition of the soul is what we need to be concerned about. In this book, Judah Smith describes the soul, the importance of the soul and what we need to do to improve our soul.

The following quote is from the back cover of the book:

“A quiet soul is far more valuable than fame and fortune. A level soul, a balanced soul, a genuine soul---that is a gift from God.”

The soul is our connection with God and needs to be kept in a healthy relationship with God. Judah uses humor and offer examples from life that will help you to have a healthy soul. He offers scripture and an easy way to understand what is needed to improve your soul.

I found the book easy to read and interesting and believe it could be used in Bible study, group discussions and enjoyable to all.
