Great Devotional

THE CASE FOR CHRIST

Daily Moments of Truth

By Lee Strobel & Mark Mittelberg

The goal of Lee Strobel and Mark Mittelberg was to offer a different kind of devotional and to show the truth of the Gospel. The most important commandment according to Jesus is;
29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. 30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. 31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31 NIV
Most devotionals cover the areas of -- all their hearts and with all their souls, what the authors wanted to do was cover -- is loving God with all our minds and with all our strength. They start with a Bible verses and quote from other Christians and continue with a writing showing the truth to help understand the Gospel and ends each devotion with a section they call, MOMENT OF TRUTH. They have written 180 devotions and offer an excellent way for all to study the devotions through Bible studies and/or discussion groups.

I believe they have accomplished their goal and recommend this book for believers and non-believers alike for and easy to read and understand devotional. The book I had for this review was a hardcover copy and was very sturdy and would handle everyday use.

Rebuilding help

THE NEHEMIAH CODE

It’s Never Too Late for a New Beginning

By O. S. Hawkins

New beginning and rebuilding are two things that we most likely have attempted to do in our life. Nehemiah had the job of rebuilding the wall and city of Jerusalem. This book is a study of the book of Nehemiah and his method of rebuilding and how the method will work for you as you attempt to start over or repair things in your life. When we try to rebuild that relationship with a friend, our marriage or any other part of life that needs to be rebuilt. The author takes us through the book of Nehemiah and shows us Nehemiah expert method of rebuilding. Rebuilding a wall is different then rebuilding relationships, but the method of doing the work is the same and this is what the author is sharing.

The book is written in six parts; getting started right, building a team spirit, rebuilders let go without letting up, understand “YAC” is what really matters, never cut what they can untie and finish strong. Some of these subjects may sound funny but when you read the answers you will understand what to do for the best results. Each part gives you a method that worked for Nehemiah and will work for you on the most important rebuilds in your life.

The book would make a great Bible study for groups to discuss and help others in their times of need. In the back of the book, in the Appendix, you get the book of Nehemiah, so you have it with you when you are reading this book. The book is a part of a series by O. S. Hawkins, most of those I have reviewed, and would add to anyone’s library.

Simply God

SIMPLY GOD

God’s Messages of Love and Encouragement

By Rich Richards

The book is about different subjects that shows hiw the love of God is simple and not hard to understand. The author writes it with a different person talking, one is himself and the other is God speaking. There are 24 chapters, each on a difference subject. Some of the subjects are; simplicity of God and Jesus, choices, obedience, righteousness to name a few. In the writing of each subject, the author shares Bible verses to help in the understanding. Some of the Bible translations used are the BBE (1965 Bible in Basic English), MKJV (Modern King James Version), which were 2 translation that I was not familiar with but found them to be easy to understand. He uses other translations as well. The truth of the book is that the love of God is ours and it is not as complicated as some try to make it. He shares some poems that are worth reading more than once.

The book has a lot of information and can get your thinking, but keep an open mind as you read, the changing from one person to the other person can be a little detracting. I think the author does a good job of getting his points across and shows the God is what we need, I am sure not everyone will like this style of writing.
